Blinn's Gage Cole earns SSBU victory over State Technical College of Missouri

Cole improved to 7-2 in the NJCAA Esports Central 1 Conference

The Blinn College esports Super Smash Bros. Ultimate team had a brief and victorious night of play Thursday.

The Buccaneers' Gage Cole faced off against State Technical College of Missouri in a one-on-one NJCAA Esports (NJCAAe) bout and came away with a 3-0 best-of-five victory.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is a crossover fighting game where players, either in one-on-one or four-on-four matches, aim to knock each other off a combat stage. The objective is for players to inflict damage to increase their opponents' likelihood of being knocked off the platform. In singles play, each player has a set number of lives or "stocks," and the match is won by reducing the opponent's stocks to zero. In crew battles, teams take turns battling, with stock carryover. The team that eliminates all opposing players' stocks first wins. Series are often best-of-three or best-of-five.

The makeup matchup helped Cole improve to 7-2 in the NJCAAe Central 1 Conference.

"Gage had been preparing for this matchup for a while, knowing that his opponent is one of the strongest players in the conference and currently ranked 5th overall," Blinn head coach and Super Smash Bros. manager Kyle Murto said. "Sitting just above them in fourth place, Gage knew this match was critical in ensuring he could hold his position and secure a strong seed for playoffs. His preparation paid off, as he executed his game plan flawlessly, shutting down his opponent's options while controlling the tempo throughout the series."

Blinn's Super Smash Bros. team will play another one-on-one NJCAAe makeup match against Dallas College Mountain View at 6 p.m. on Friday before playing nine NJCAAe tilts against Mountain View, Laredo College, Coastal Bend College, Jefferson College, Moberly Area Community College, Laramie County Community College, and Dallas College Richland beginning at 3 p.m. on Tuesday, March 25.

Blinn has competed in intercollegiate athletics since 1903 and captured 50 national championships since 1987.
