Blinn rolls past Lamar State-Port Arthur for Region XIV South twin bill sweep

The Buccaneers improved to 4-4 in the South

Blinn College softball powered past Lamar State College-Port Arthur for a Region XIV South doubleheader sweep Monday in Port Arthur, Texas.

The Buccaneers routed the Seahawks 6-0 and 14-4.

Blinn improved to 7-17 overall and 4-4 in the South.

"It was good to get two conference wins and get back into the race," Bucs head coach Rick Church said. "We benefited from two well-pitched games and some good offense."

In the opener, sophomore pitcher Paige Bunting cruised to a complete-game two-hitter to lead her team to victory. Bunting walked two and struck out six.

The Bucs' lineup backed its pitcher with a nine-hit attack which included five extra-base hits.

Freshman Madysen Taylor opened the scoring with an RBI single in the second, and freshman Cadence Wiese kept it going with a run-scoring double in the third. In the fourth, freshman Halle Scheel drove in a run on a single, and in the fifth, the Bucs closed the scoring on an RBI double from freshman Annie Beckendorf, an RBI fielder's choice from freshman Daniela Lopez, and another RBI single from Taylor.

Taylor and sophomore Bailey Boetjer had two hits apiece, including a pair of doubles for Boetjer.

Game two was a closer affair through five frames, but Blinn exploded for 10 runs across the sixth and seventh innings to blow out Lamar State.

Sophomore Bella De Los Santos picked up the win after working a complete game. She allowed four earned runs on nine hits, walked three, and fanned four.

She was given a plethora of insurance late in the game, starting with Blinn's five-run sixth inning.

With the Bucs leading just 4-2, Wiese gave her team some more breathing room with a two-run double. Beckendorf added an RBI double, sophomore T'Era Garrett drove in a run on a two-bagger, and another run crossed the plate on a defensive error.

Wiese got things going again in the seventh with an RBI single before Beckendorf blasted a two-run home run to left field. Garrett scored on an error to cap the outburst.

Blinn finished with 16 hits, including multi-hit games for five Bucs. Beckendorf went 4 for 5 with four RBIs, Boetjer had a trio of hits which included a solo home run in the third inning, Wiese had three hits and drove in three, Garrett had two doubles, and Scheel added a pair of singles.

Blinn gets back to work with a South home doubleheader against Angelina College at 2 p.m. on Wednesday at Hohlt Park in Brenham, Texas.

Blinn has competed in intercollegiate athletics since 1903 and captured 50 national championships since 1987.
