Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

No. 12 Blinn extends winning streak with thrilling five-set Region XIV triumph over No. 15 Navarro

The Buccaneers have won 14 consecutive matches and are now 21-2 overall

A back-and-forth affair between two of Region XIV's top volleyball teams went the way of No. 12 Blinn College on Tuesday as the Buccaneers outlasted No. 15 Navarro College in five sets.

Blinn rallied back from a first-set loss to defeat the Bulldogs 19-25, 29-27, 25-16, 21-25, 15-11 in Corsicana, Texas.

The Bucs improved to 21-2 overall and 4-0 in region play, and also extended its winning streak to 14 matches.

"I thought the girls played hard tonight, but we didn't necessarily play well the entire time," Blinn head coach Terry Gamble said. "We have to learn how to play a lot better on the defensive end, and we have to serve a lot better if we're going to consistently compete at a high level. With that said, it's always good to get a road win, especially against a really good team like Navarro."

The Bucs' well-rounded offensive attack proved critical against the Bulldogs, with freshman outside hitter MaKenna Loo, sophomore right-side hitter Kellen Dorotik, and freshman outside hitter/middle blocker Rosalinda Navarro posting 16, 14, and 10 kills, respectively.

Dorotik padded her lead as NJCAA Division I's kills leader and now has 372 on the year. Loo climbed into third place in the national rankings with 259 kills.

Freshmen Bromli Watson and Leah Hoss continued their run as Blinn's dynamic setting duo, as Watson dished out a team-high 23 assists followed by 21 for Hoss.

At the service line, freshman outside hitter Greta Rakow tallied three aces and Hoss tacked on a pair.

On the floor, the Bucs' defense produced 65 digs, bolstered by 18 from freshman libero Sophie Ilagan. Sophomore liberos Cierra Pesak and Kirby Kliafas added 13 and 12, respectively.

At the net, Dorotik provided solid blocking with a solo tally and three assists, while freshman middle blocker Jana Cetkovic recorded three assists.

Blinn's season continues this week with the Blinn Invitational, the Bucs' final tournament of the season. The Bucs open play against College of DuPage at 6 p.m. on Thursday inside the Kruse Center in Brenham, Texas. Blinn battles Dallas Christian College (1 p.m.) and Jefferson College (5 p.m.) on Friday, and finishes the competition against Ranger College (11 a.m.) and Hill College (5 p.m.) on Saturday.

Blinn has competed in intercollegiate athletics since 1903 and captured 49 national championships since 1987.
