Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Impressive fourth quarter helps No. 25 Blinn rally past Western Texas

The Buccaneers concluded the two-day Blinn Classic with a 2-0 record

Defense was again the name of the game for the 25th-ranked Blinn College women's basketball on Saturday, as the Buccaneers handcuffed Western Texas College in the fourth quarter en route to a 61-50 victory at the Kruse Center in Brenham, Texas.

Blinn's come-from-behind victory capped its 2-0 showing at its own Blinn Classic tournament and improved the Bucs' record to 9-2 overall.

Blinn also turned to its defense in a 55-37 triumph over Ranger College on Friday.

Western Texas took a 44-43 lead into the fourth quarter, but the Bucs buckled down across the final 10 minutes of play to allow the Westerners just six points in the period. Blinn made 15 consecutive defensive stops against Western Texas and didn't allow a bucket until the 2-minute mark of the quarter.

"We missed nine free throws and a lot of open looks, but I thought we moved the ball as well as we have all year," Bucs head coach Jeff Jenkins said. "We had too many live ball turnovers that led to a lot of easy baskets for Western Texas in the third quarter, but after giving up 24 points in the third we did a really nice job of bouncing back in the fourth. I was extremely proud of how we handled the adversity and then made plays in the fourth."

Blinn led 10-6 after the first quarter and 27-20 at the half before the Westerners rallied in the third with a 24-16 effort.

Offensively, the Bucs were boosted by a game-high 18 points from sophomore guard Wynter Jones, as well as 10 for sophomore guard Jonesha Neal. Sophomore forward Tocarra Johnson chipped in eight.

Blinn's season continues with a non-region home tilt against Hill College at 5:30 p.m. on Monday at the Kruse Center.

Blinn has competed in intercollegiate athletics since 1903 and captured 49 NJCAA national championships since 1987.
