Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

No. 18 Blinn stifles Western Texas for season-opening victory

The Buccaneers continue play with a road trip to 23rd-ranked McLennan on Nov. 5

The 18th-ranked Blinn College women's basketball team found an offensive groove while leaning on its reliable defense to earn a 79-50 road win over Western Texas College on Friday in Snyder, Texas.

"It was a good team win tonight," Buccaneers head coach Jeff Jenkins said. "It was the first 6-hour road trip for our freshmen, and they handled it well. We had 12 players land in the scoring column and 14 that played extremely well defensively."

Blinn's defense picked up right where it left off last season (57 points per game allowed in 2023-24), stifling the Westerners from start to finish.

The Bucs built a 14-8 lead after the first period before their offense began to churn in the second. A 23-point quarter sent Blinn into the half leading 37-20.

The Bucs kept Western Texas at bay 55-37 after three periods.

Leading Blinn offensive was freshman guard Taylor Spencer, who tallied a team-high 13 points. Sophomore guards Wynter Jones and Ja'Nya Thomas followed with 12 apiece, and freshman guard Jaya Gradney tacked on eight.

The Bucs continue their season with a road tilt at 23rd-ranked McLennan Community College at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 5, in Waco, Texas.

Blinn has competed in intercollegiate athletics since 1903 and captured 49 national championships since 1987.
