Blinn's Call of Duty, League of Legends, and Super Smash Brothers teams pick up wins

The teams competed in NACE and NJCAAe matches

Blinn College esports made it a clean sweep with victories in Call of Duty, League of Legends, and Super Smash Brothers matchups on Monday.

The Buccaneers began their victorious night when their Rocket League team of Xavier Johnson, Cody Lamar, and Braeden Pomeroy earned a 3-2 best-of-five win over Shenandoah University in a National Association of College Esports (NACE) bout.

Blinn is now 3-2 in NACE Rocket League play this season.

"The series was extremely back and forth, with each team trading wins until game five," said Blinn assistant coach Ryan Lucich, who manages each of the Buccaneer teams that competed Monday. "In the end, we took game five in commanding fashion, winning 4-1. I could see how focused the team was throughout each game, and they continuously hyped each other up. I strongly believe that gave them the confidence and energy needed to win the decisive round."

Blinn Rocket League gets back to work with a NACE tilt against Maryville University at 6 p.m on Monday, Oct. 21.

The Bucs' Call of Duty and League of Legends teams competed simultaneously Monday, and both pulled out convincing NJCAA Esports wins as they swept their respective competition.

Blinn's Call of Duty squad of Michael Allen, Isaias Nieto, Joshua Russell, and Josiah Koite defeated Carl Albert State College 3-0 in their NJCAAe opener.

"We really put in a lot of work at the end of last week to define what we wanted out of this season, and we knew this would be a real test right out of the gate against a good team," Lucich said. "We just came out with so much more energy and coordination than we've had previously, and I'm really proud how the team has started coming together. I can from both the time and effort they've invested how badly they want to go all the way this season. This was a great answer to see where we stand at and I know it will give us confidence going forward."

The Bucs continue their Call of Duty schedule with an NJCAAe matchup against Wichita State University Tech at 7 p.m. on Tuesday.

The Bucs concluded their night with a 2-0 League of Legends triumph over Keyano College. The quintet of Anthony Fullerton, Alec Chojecki, Jonathan Nguyen, Brian Shi, and Alejandro Aular got the job done for Blinn.

"Like Call of Duty, today was a big test for us," Lucich said. "We went through a roster change along with facing a tough matchup, but everyone was prepared to answer the call, and each player had really good moments and highlights. I wasn't sure what to expect today, but we went into the game with the mindset of let's have fun, play our game, and see what happens. In both games, we came out with strong leads across the board and were able to transition those to later fights before eventually emerging victorious."

The Bucs will play their next NJCAAe League of Legends match when they battle Southeast Community College at 7 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 14.

Blinn has competed in intercollegiate athletics since 1903 and captured 49 NJCAA national championships since 1987.
