Blinn begins SWJCFC playoff push at home against Northeastern Oklahoma A&M

The Buccaneers need to win their final three games to stay in postseason contention

A season-defining stretch of football begins this weekend for the Blinn College Buccaneers.

With three regular-season games remaining, Blinn will look to start a push toward the Southwest Junior College Football Conference playoffs when it hosts Northeastern Oklahoma A&M College at 1 p.m. on Saturday at Cub Stadium in Brenham, Texas.

Blinn (3-3 overall) and NEO (2-4) face off with identical 1-3 conference marks, and Saturday's outcome will rejuvenate one team's playoff hopes while effectively ending the other's.

While Blinn is likely to require some help from other conference outcomes across the final three weeks of play, it will need to finish the regular season with three victories to give itself the best shot at the postseason.

"We've talked about it all week – if you want to be where you want to be at the end of the season, you have to leave no doubt about it," Bucs head coach Ryan Mahon said. "We can change the entire story of our season in these next three games, so it's time to decide how we want it to go."

Following a pair of tough conference losses in Weeks 6 and 7, Blinn regained some momentum with a dominant 59-0 home win over Community Christian College (Lafayette, La.) on Oct. 19.

That shutout continued an impressive trend for the Bucs' defense, which has allowed more than 21 points just one this season. Blinn is fourth in total points allowed (90) in NJCAA Division I and ninth in points allowed per game (15).

The Bucs will aim to take advantage of a Norsemen offense that has struggled to score points this season.

NEO is averaging 19.7 points per outing while relying heavily on its running attack. The Norsemen average 165.6 rushing yards per game against 125 through the air.

"They love to run the football, and I think we have the personnel to keep them bottled up in the backfield and get some tackles for losses," Blinn sophomore defensive lineman Jequarrius McClendon said.

Blinn's defense has excelled in creating negative plays, tallying 56 tackles for loss totaling 234 yards, along with 18 sacks this season.

Offensively, Blinn will need to take advantage of an NEO defense which surrenders almost 300 yards and 30 points per contest.

The Bucs are running the ball at a rate of 244.67 yards per game, which could pair nicely with a Norsemen unit that allows an average of 160 grounds yards. NEO has been far stingier against the pass with 137 yards allowed per outing. Blinn is averaging 165 yards through the air.

"We think this is a winnable game and a game where we can move the ball on offense and be successful," sophomore quarterback Rylan Wooten said. "NEO is going to play a lot of man-to-man coverage on defense and we have the speed and personnel to get separation and make plays. NEO is a tough squad, but it falls on us to execute and handle business on our end, and I think we can do that."
