Blinn to host Community Christian with sights set on offensive consistency

The Buccaneers are looking to snap a two-game skid ahead of a tough season-ending stretch

A sudden adjustment to this week's matchup has done little to break the focus of the Blinn College football team.

The Buccaneers will host Community Christian College (Lafayette, La.) for a non-conference tilt at 3 p.m. on Saturday at Cub Stadium in Brenham, Texas, looking to snap a two-game losing streak and set themselves up with some momentum ahead of a tough three-game, season-ending stretch.

Following Saturday's contest, the Bucs will play three Southwest Junior College Football Conference matchups and will likely need to win all three to qualify for the conference playoffs.

This week's matchup will look drastically different than previously scheduled as Community Christian is filling a void left by a sudden cancellation from John Melvin University.

Regardless of who lines up on the other side of the football, however, Blinn (2-3) says it will be ready.

"Nothing changes; you still have to come out and play good, sound football and stay focused on getting better," Blinn sophomore defensive back Ifeanyi Ohalete said. "We have an opportunity to regain some of our footing and fine-tune some things before a really tough finish to our conference schedule."

The Bucs hope to build momentum this weekend following a pair of tough conference losses to Trinity Valley Community College and Tyler Junior College. Those two setbacks came via identical 13-10 outcomes.

Bucs head coach Ryan Mahon said a main focus for his team this week will be to conclude offensive drives with points. In its overtime loss to Tyler on Oct. 12, Blinn was denied on two field goal opportunities and failed to cross the goal line on another drive in which the nose of the football was within an eyelash of the goal line.

"The bottom line is we have to learn to finish," Mahon explained. "When you are in the opponent's red zone, you have done everything right up to that point, so you have to come away with points. That has been the most frustrating thing for us offensively … being right there and not finishing. If we can get to the point where we are closing out promising drives the way we are supposed to, I think we'll be in the exact position we want to be in at the end of the game."

Blinn's defense has been nothing if not spectacular this fall, a trend the Bucs could continue against Community Christian.

Blinn has allowed just 90 points this season (18 per game), with a bulk of those coming in a wild 44-43 victory over Navarro College on Sept. 28. Nationally, Blinn boasts the 14th best scoring defense in NJCAA Division I and is allowing a respectable 333 yards of total offense per game.

"The defense is playing great and I'm really proud of that bunch," Mahon said. "They put on their hardhats and take their lunch pails with them to every game and give us a hard-fought effort. They are doing an excellent job of playing situational football and being present for every moment. If we can get that same mentality translated over to the other side of the football, that's how we become really dangerous."
