Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

No. 23 Blinn uses late bucket, free throw to stun No. 4 Trinity Valley in Region XIV opener

The Buccaneers are now 10-4 overall following their road win over the Cardinals

Sophomore Tianna Mathis scored on a layup as she was fouled and sank the subsequent free throw with just seconds remaining to send the 23rd-ranked Blinn College women's basketball team to a 64-62 upset victory over No. 4 Trinity Valley Community College on Wednesday in Athens, Texas.

The matchup was the Region XIV opener for both squads.

"I am so proud of this team," Blinn head coach Jeff Jenkins said. "For them to go on the road to face the fourth-ranked team in the nation and win ...  I just can't say enough about our defense and our effort."

Defense continued to be the Buccaneers' driving force against the Cardinals, but it was some timely offense that delivered Blinn (10-4, 1-0 Region XIV) its statement win.

Trailing 62-61 with possession of the ball and 8.1 seconds left to play, the Bucs ran an inbounds play from its half of the court. Freshman guard Chelsy Singleton collected the initial pass and quickly dished to a wide-open Mathis in the paint, where she immediately deposited a layup. Mathis was tripped on her way down and moved to the line with 3.5 seconds to go. From there, the third-year guard and Blinn's most experienced player put the final touches on a big night.

Trinity Valley got a contested 3-pointer off just before the final buzzer, but the shot ricocheted off the rim to seal the outcome.

"Honestly, this win was made possible because of our defense," Jenkins added. "If we don't foul, it's hard to score on us. Chelsy also made some big offensive plays tonight and her teammates did a good job of getting her the ball."

Blinn trailed 23-16 after the first period but rallied to tie the game 31-all heading into halftime. The Bucs then carried a 47-44 edge into the fourth period.

Up next for Blinn is a region home tilt against Paris Junior College at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 13, at the Kruse Center in Brenham, Texas.

Blinn has competed in intercollegiate athletics since 1903 and captured 45 NJCAA national championships since 1987.
