Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

No. 3 Buccaneers stave off Angelina on the road for Region XIV victory

Blinn is still unbeaten in conference play with a 14-0 record

The third-ranked Blinn College women's basketball team earned an 81-75 road victory over Angelina College in Region XIV play Saturday in Lufkin, Texas.

The victory pushed the Buccaneers to 27-1 overall and kept their upbeat region record intact at 14-0 with one game remaining.

"It was a great win against an Angelina team that played extremely well," said Blinn head coach Jeff Jenkins, who earned his 496th career collegiate coaching victory. "These are the kind of games that will help us at the regional tournament."

Blinn led 22-14 at the end of the first period, but the game tightened up drastically the rest of the way. Angelina pulled within 39-36 at the half and trailed Blinn just 41-40 heading into the fourth quarter.

"Every possession in the game was a big possession and that's what basketball this time of the year should be," Jenkins added.

Sophomore guards Hannah Humphrey and Crystal Smith paced Blinn with 20 and 16 points, respectively.

"Hannah and Crystal were huge down the stretch and made big-time plays," Jenkins said.

Sophomore forward Tiffany Tullis had a double-double with 11 points and 13 rebounds, while sophomore guard Skylar Barnes and freshman guard Amyria Walker chipped in 10 points apiece.

The Bucs finish the regular season with a region home battle against No. 5 Trinity Valley Community College at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, March 1, at the Kruse Center in Brenham, Texas. Blinn will celebrate Sophomore Day along with the Blinn men's basketball team, which hosts Angelina College at 7:30 p.m.

As part of the festivities, the Kruse Center concession stand will offer 25-cent hot dogs.

Blinn has competed in intercollegiate athletics since 1903 and captured 42 NJCAA national championships since 1987.
