Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Big offensive effort pushes Buccaneers past Cedar Valley

Blinn improved to 5-0 overall after winning its second game of the Blue Bell Classic

An early offensive flurry was all the Blinn College men's basketball team needed to send itself to victory over Dallas College-Cedar Valley.

Three consecutive 3-pointers put the Buccaneers in control in the opening minutes of Saturday's contest and Blinn rode that wave of momentum to a 100-68 win over the Suns on day two of the Blue Bell Classic at the Kruse Center in Brenham, Texas.

Blinn (5-0) won for the second time in two days during its lone home tournament of the season.

"I think our guys are a really good defensive team, which takes a lot of effort and energy, and I think they can score as well," Bucs head coach Scott Schumacher said. "It comes down to whether we're going to guard and rebound, and right now we're a pretty good defensive team and a pretty good rebounding team, and that's opening up the offense. I thought our guys played a fantastic game."

Cedar Valley struck first with a mid-range floater on the opening offensive possession of the game, but the Bucs countered with a flurry of long-distance buckets.

Sophomore guard Nick Folk connected from the right wing, sophomore guard Masiah Gilyard followed with a triple from the corner, and Folk sank another trey near the top of the arch to make it 9-2 in favor of the hosts.

Blinn would ultimately run away with the game in the first half as it took its first double-digit lead (21-9) on another 3, this time from freshman forward Jaylin Payne.

The Bucs led 52-28 by halftime.

"We won our game yesterday, but today was a new day and we just wanted to bring that same energy into this game and get the win again," said sophomore guard Jadin Johnson, who finished with a team-high 17 points.

Johnson is the fourth different leading scorer Blinn has had during its five victories this season.

"It can be anybody's night on this team," Johnson added. "We have a really good team with great players who can all score when we need them to."

In total, 13 players scored two or more points for Blinn. Following Johnson was Gilyard with 15 points, sophomore guard Nick Folk had 12, and Payne and freshman wing Anthony Isaac tallied 10 apiece.

The Bucs sank 11 3-pointers.

"Defense, defense, defense … we had to lock in on defense, and that allowed all of us to be successful on offense," Isaac said. "That's how we want to play every time, and our team is very versatile up and down the lineup. We're getting rebounds, pushing the ball up court, and using everyone on fastbreaks and easy layups, and everybody is getting their chance to eat."

The Bucs conclude the Classic with a matchup against the University of Arkansas-Cossatot at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 12.

Blinn has competed in intercollegiate athletics since 1903 and captured 44?NJCAA national championships since 1987.?
