Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

No. 3 Blinn ramps up defense to power past Western Texas

The Buccaneers improved to 5-0 overall ahead of Saturday trip to Ranger College

The third-ranked Blinn College women's basketball team leaned on its reliable offense while flexing its defensive muscles on its way to a 70-41 victory over Western Texas College on Monday.

The Buccaneers (5-0) earned the victory in Snyder, Texas, with the help of an impressive third quarter in which they outscored the Westerners 15-2. The stiff defense helped Blinn turn a 38-28 halftime lead into a 53-30 cushion heading into the fourth quarter.

"It was a good team win after a very long road trip," Jenkins said of the almost 12-hour round trip. "I was extremely proud of our defense in the third quarter."

The Bucs controlled the game from the outset, starting with a 22-16 lead at the end of the first period.

Sophomore forward Tiffany Tullis had 15 points and eight rebounds to pace Blinn, and sophomore guard Crystal Smith had 13 points and five boards. Sophomore guard Skylar Barnes finished with nine points and five rebounds, and sophomore guard Allana Thompson chipped in eight and seven, respectively.

The Buccaneers will play their sixth road game of the season when they visit Ranger College for a 2 p.m. bout on Saturday, Nov. 19, in Ranger, Texas.

Blinn has competed in intercollegiate athletics since 1903 and captured 42 NJCAA national championships since 1987.
