Danny Palmer is in his first season as defensive coordinator for the Blinn College football team.
With nearly a half century of coaching experience, Palmer is one of the most respected names in collegiate coaching.
Palmer joined Blinn following four season as offensive line coach at Evangel Christian Academy in Shreveport, La.
Most notably, Palmer spent 13 seasons as head coach of Tyler Junior College (2006-2018). During his time with the Apaches, Palmer worked with current Blinn head coach Ryan Mahon for 10 seasons, including eight in which Mahon served as Palmer's offensive coordinator. Palmer finished with a 75-49 record with seven playoff appearances. He also helped more than 100 players sign with four-year universities.
Palmer's coaching career includes stints as head coach at Texarkana, Pampa, Waco Richfield and Bonham high schools, and assistant coaching positions at UT-Arlington, Oklahoma State University, Northwest Mississippi Community College, Austin Peay State University, Texas Southern University and University of Houston. Palmer also previously served as the athletic director and head football coach at Chavez High School in Houston.
Among a myriad of coaching achievements, Palmer was named the 1977 District 8-5A Coach of the Year, the 1978 Central Texas Coach of the Year, the District 10-4A Coach of the Year, and in 1996 was nominated for the Frank Broyles College Assistant Coach of the Year while a member of the University of Houston staff.
During his time with Houston, Palmer played a role in signing 64 players, 16 of which went on to play in the NFL.
Additionally, Palmer was inducted into the Tyler ISD Hall of Fame in 2015.
Palmer is from Tyler, Texas, where he starred on the gridiron, baseball diamond, and basketball court for Tyler High School. Palmer was a member of the 1968 Texas All-State baseball team and was recruited by legendary Blinn baseball head coach Leroy Dreyer. Palmer ultimately signed with the University of Southern Mississippi football team as a quarterback, and played for the Golden Eagles from 1969-71.
Palmer earned his Bachelor of Science in Education from Southern Mississippi, and later earned a Masters in Education from Southeastern Oklahoma State University in 1987.
Palmer and his wife Sharon have been married for 54 years. They have two daughters, Bethany and Stacy, and three grandchildren, Benny, Myles, and Brianna.
