Blinn rolls past Amarillo College in League of Legends

Buccaneers improve to 2-0 in NJCAAe play with 2-0 victory

The Blinn College esports team cruised to a 2-0 victory over Amarillo College in an NJCAA Esports (NJCAAe) League of Legends matchup Monday.

After earning a forfeit win to begin the season, the Buccaneers improved to 2-0 in their first action of the fall behind a pair of decisive victories, showing strong coordination and execution throughout the best-of-three series.

"We felt favored going in and had a solid idea of how to draft, which played out perfectly," Blinn assistant coach and League of Legends manager Ryan Lucich said.

League of Legends is a five-versus-five multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA) in which teams draft champions with unique abilities and work to destroy the enemy Nexus. Along the way, teams contest objectives such as turrets, inhibitors, Dragons and Baron Nashor to gain strategic advantages.

In round one, Blinn built its composition around Long Nguyen's Yasuo in the bot lane. Nguyen took control of the game as the Bucs consistently won team fights and ultimately closed out the victory.

Blinn made several changes in round two, including replacing Johnson Le with Jose Rios and implementing role swaps to create additional flexibility in the draft. The adjustments paid off as Carlos Dickens and Benjamin Bryant established an early advantage in the bot lane, while Andrew Vo scaled into the late game and took over on Ekko.

"We again seemed a lot more coordinated than Amarillo, which allowed us to close out the game cleanly," Lucich said. "I'm proud of our new roster so far and how they showed up in our first match."

Blinn's League of Legends team also includes Jose Rios and Benjamin Bryant.

The Bucs have a bye next week before returning to NJCAAe competition against Brookdale Community College at 7 p.m. Monday, Oct. 19.

Blinn has competed in intercollegiate athletics since 1903 and captured 53 national championships since 1987.
