Blinn endures tough night NJCAA Esports Super Smash Bros spring opener

The Buccaneers went 1-5 in six NJCAA Esports matches

The Blinn College esports team had a rough spring debut in Super Smash Bros play Tuesday, as three Buccaneers combined to go 1-5 in six NJCAA Esports (NJCAAe) matches.

Blinn's Tanner Hicks went 0-2 in West Conference 3 play against Iowa Central Community College and Bismarck State College; Brady Landry split a pair of West Conference 5 tilts against Coastal Bend College and Dallas College-Richland; and Gabe Pipes fell to Mineral Area College and Dawson Community College in West Conference 6 action.

"All of these losses though will be used to better our play," Blinn assistant coach and Super Smash Bros manager Kyle Murto said. "We have a lot of things to work on going forward and we will be busting our butts to make sure we get some wins next week."

The Bucs will continue NJCAAe Super Smash Bros play weekly, pitting four players against four individual opponents. Next up, Blinn's Cody Bentlage will compete in a pair of NJCAAe makeup matches against Dallas College-Richland at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 8, and Barton Community College at 1:30 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 9.

Blinn has competed in intercollegiate athletics since 1903 and captured 45 NJCAA national championships since 1987.
