Rick Church becomes first coach to reach 800 wins with the Buccaneers

Rick Church recently became the first head coach in Blinn history to claim 800 wins with the Buccaneers in his 20th season with the program.

He earned his 800th win as Blinn's head coach this season when the Buccaneers defeated Lamar State College-Port Arthur, 12-3, in the second game of a doubleheader.

"I am happy to hit this milestone and I couldn't have done it without my assistant coaches throughout the years or have even won one game without my players," said Rick Church. "This is my 20th season at Blinn and I have not lost track of what my purpose here is and my passion for coaching. It is not all about softball, it is about helping my student athletes during two years of their life to move on past Blinn."

Church now holds the most all-time victories at Blinn. His overall collegiate coaching record is 882-373 (.703).

"Coach Church is one of the greatest coaches at any collegiate level and Blinn College is lucky to have him," said Scott Schumacher, Blinn athletic director.

Under Church, the Buccaneers have captured conference and regional championships in 2003, 2006, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012 and most recently in 2015 with the program's seventh trip to the NJCAA National Championships. His team finished second in the nation in 2003, the best finish in program history.

This season, the Buccaneers hold a 27-12 overall record after picking up eight straight wins. Blinn sits at the top of the Region XIV South Division standings with an undefeated 10-0 conference record.

Next, the Buccaneers look to remain undefeated in Region XIV play against San Jacinto College-South on Friday, April 5, in a doubleheader starting at 2 p.m. at Hohlt Park.

Blinn has competed in intercollegiate athletics since 1903 and captured 38 NJCAA national championships since 1987.
