Villareal brings in six runs to help Buccaneers power past Northeast Texas, 16-6

BEAUMONT, Texas – Blinn College used six RBIs from Alivia Villareal to bounce back in a big way to beat Northeast Texas Community College 16-6 in five innings to close the second day of the Region XIV Crossover Tournament at the Beaumont Athletic Complex.

Blinn did suffer a 9-3 loss to Tyler Junior College to earn a split of the pair of games. With the split, the Buccaneers overall record moves to 12-10.

Tyler 9 – Blinn 3

Blinn had a hard time keeping Tyler off the scoreboard and dropped its opening game of the day 9-3.

Amy Alexander and Katy Sawyer both had a single and an RBI while Shelby Achille had two singles and an RBI. Nicole Garcia had a double and a single in the loss.

Tyler jumped out to an early 2-0 lead with a pair of runs in the first inning. Blinn did counter in the bottom of the first when Kalli Edwards walked with one out and then scored on an RBI single to right by Alexander to get within 2-1. Tyler did score three runs in each the third and fifth innings to take an 8-1 lead.

The Buccaneers did show some fight in the bottom of the fifth when Garcia doubled with one out and then scored on a sacrifice fly hit by Achille to left to get within 8-2. Sawyer drove in a third run with a single in the infield but that would be the final run scored by the Buccaneers. Tyler added one more in the seventh to seal the six-run victory.

Blinn 16 – Northeast Texas 6

Blinn was able to bounce back offensively and only needed five innings to score 16 runs in a 16-6 victory over Northeast Texas to close the day.

Villareal had a huge game after knocking in six runs with a home run and a double. Emily Noah brought in three runs while Garcia, Edwards and Achille each knocked in a pair of runs. Sam Junkin came on in relief and pitched the final 2 1-3 innings to get the win while allowing three earned runs while striking out two.

Blinn got started in the first inning when Garcia singled and then came in to score after an RBI single by Noah to left for a 1-0 lead. The Buccaneers kept rolling in the second when Alyssa Hitt doubled to begin inning and then scored on a ground out by Edwards. Morgan Gray scored the third run on an error for a 3-0 lead. Northeast Texas scored three in the third to tie the game at 3-3.

The game wasn't tied for long as Blinn started the bottom of the third with a single by Noah and Alexander walked. Villareal brought in both with a double to right for a 5-3 lead. Villareal and Hitt later scored on an error for a 7-3 lead.

Edwards kept the scoring going with an RBI ground out for the eighth run. Achille doubled to left for a 9-3 lead and then Noah capped the scoring with a line drive RBI single to center for a 10-3 lead after three. Northeast Texas added three runs in the fourth to get within 10-6 but it would be the final time Northeast would touch the plate.

The Buccaneers looked to end the game early with a big rally in the fifth. Garcia got it started with a one-out single and then scored on a single by Achille for an 11-6 lead. Noah followed with an RBI single to center for the 12th run. Villareal put on the finishes touches on the game with a grand slam for a 16-6 victory.

Blinn will close out the Region XIV Crossover on Sunday, Feb. 26 with two more games. The Buccaneers begin against Kilgore College at 9 a.m. and then close against Trinity Valley Community College at 11 a.m.
