ATHENS, Texas — Trinity Valley Community College defeated No. 6 Blinn College football (4-1, 2-1) by the score of 42-21 on Saturday night.
Daveon Boyd was exceptional in the pocket, completing 31-of-46 passes for 305 yards and three touchdowns. However, the Cardinals managed to give the Buccaneers their first loss this season.
Carlos Grace led Blinn with 68 yards on 13 carries and Keric Wheatfall led with 114 yards on nine receptions. On defense, Colby Peterson led with nine tackles, while Tuciano Pope, Tarik Cooper and Djuan Matthews followed with seven tackles each.
Blinn opened the game strong with a 33-yard touchdown pass from Boyd to Jamarceon Jackson with 13:56 on the clock in the first quarter. The Buccaneers held the 7-0 lead until 5:26 remained in the opening quarter and Trinity Valley evened the score with a six-yard rushing touchdown.
In the second quarter, the Cardinals continued to grow their lead with a 39-yard rushing touchdown and an interception return to pull ahead 21-7 with 3:17 left in the half. The Buccaneers moved quickly and scored on a 41-yard touchdown pass from Boyd to Corey Smith with 2:36 left in the second quarter to trail 21-14 at the half.
The Cardinals scored the only touchdown in the third quarter with a 28-yard run to lead 28-14 with 3:38 showing on the clock.
Blinn fought back in the final quarter with 8:07 left as Boyd threw a 13-yard pass to Danny Gray for the Buccaneers to trail by one touchdown, 28-21. Trinity Valley scored the final two touchdowns of the game with a 44-yard run with 2:08 left and a 10-yard run with 2:02 left following a fumble recovery for a 42-21 final.
The Buccaneers will face No. 4 Northeastern Oklahoma A&M on Saturday, Oct. 6, at 3 p.m. at Cub stadium following a bye week.
Blinn has competed in intercollegiate athletics since 1903 and captured 38 NJCAA national championships since 1987.
